Spyderco Marcin Slysz Techno 2 C158TIP2 Folding Knife

In 2012, Spyderco released their first collaboration with Polish custom knifemaker Marcin Slysz — Techno. Its elegantly simple design and rugged construction style immediately caught the attention of the Spyderco community and shined a light on Slysz and his exquisitely crafted custom knives. In a short time, the Techno has earned a devoted following and helped redefine the concept of the compact folding knife.

Although Slysz later collaborated with Spyderco on two more designs, the Techno continued to captivate end users around the world. As its popularity continued to grow, so did the number of requests Spyderco received for an updated, even more refined version. Slysz, who already had his own ideas to improve the design, was more than happy to oblige and responded with Techno 2.

Like its predecessor, the Techno 2 packs enormous power and utility into an amazingly compact package. Its stonewashed blade is still made from premium CTS-XHP stainless steel, but its thickness has been reduced from 4.5 mm (0.177 in) to a trimmer 3.5 mm (0.138 in). Instead of a full grind, it features a high saber grind that maintains a full-thickness spine for strength while providing excellent cutting edge geometry for low-friction cutting performance. The blade profile has also been improved to an almost sheep’s foot shape instead of the previous drop-point pattern. This provides better point utility and cutting leverage compared to the original. Strategically placed edging on the thumb ramp provides a non-slip purchase for maximum control during use, and the trademark round opening allows for quick one-handed opening.

The Techno 2 handle has also been tweaked, while still retaining all the key features of the original. It consists of two strong scales precisely manufactured from solid titanium 6Al4V. Both boast a handsome stone finish and are machined to accept a deep pocket knife wire clip that easily swivels for left or right side carry. Instead of the G10 backspacer of the first-generation design, the Techno 2 scales are joined by green-anodized titanium spacers to reduce weight and create an easy-to-clean, open-back design style. The scale on the back forms the basis of the knife’s solid Reeve Integral Lock (RIL) mechanism, which keeps the blade securely open during use, yet can be easily released with one hand. For end users who like to accessorize their knives with lanyards or pendants,

The highly sophisticated Techno 2 is a compact, extremely practical cutting tool capable of operating with authority far beyond its size. It clearly surpasses its predecessor while continuing to showcase Marcin Slysz’s distinctive approach to knife design.

Marcin Slysz
Marcin Slysz’s fascination with knives began at an early age with his very first pocket knife. As his interest grew, some of his friends who were avid knife collectors began to introduce him to the world of “serious” manufacturing and handmade knives. Unfortunately, Slysz found that these knives also came at “serious” prices that were well above his budget. Undeterred, he decided that if he couldn’t buy the knives he wanted, he would make them himself.

Slysz made his first knife in 2006—a heavy, solid blade that he made with nothing more than a file and a lot of elbow grease. Although it was a slow, extremely arduous process, he thoroughly enjoyed it and was convinced that he had found his calling in life. Shortly thereafter, he invested in a grinder and began making knives in earnest. As fixed blades led to folding knives and his skills and tools continued to improve, Slysz eventually decided to quit his full-time job to pursue a career in cutlery. He never looked back.

Now considered one of Poland’s leading custom knife manufacturers, Slysz specializes in high-tech, tactically themed boards made from state-of-the-art materials. For jigsaw handles, he prefers the strength and light weight of titanium and timask, and for solid blades, the look and texture of sandblasted Micarta cloth. For blade steels, he works mostly in RWL34, but also uses CPM-S30V, 154CM, Damasteel, and Chad Nichols’ custom forged Damascus stainless. The vast majority of his designs feature titanium handles, Reeve Integral Locks (RILs) and premium stainless steel blades; however, it’s just as comfortable crafting folding clutches, a wide variety of fixed blades, and a variety of specialized tactical tools and gadgets. He even does his own engraving on both knives and the occasional handmade piece of jewelry.

Slysz’s impeccable craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail have made his custom knives extremely popular with both collectors and discerning end users worldwide. They also caught the attention of Spyderco leaders and made him a natural choice for a collaboration project with Spyderco. The release of its Techno folder in 2012 created an immediate buzz and quickly gained a passionate following in the Spyderco community. He was followed by Slysz Bowie in 2014 and SpydieChef in 2016, both of which continued to expand Slysz’s popularity and the knife community’s recognition of his work.
