Katana is a type of Japanese sword used since the 15th century. century. A katana has a curved blade, similar to a saber, with a single edge, a guard and a handle with an oval cross-section. The length used to be from two to three shaku (shaku = 30.3 cm). It was worn by the samurai tucked behind the belt with the blade facing up, traditionally together with the wakizashi short sword or a personal samurai dagger called a tanto.
