Closing Knife Emerson TKO SF
Ernest Emerson started making custom knives in his garage in 1979. He quickly established himself as a knife maker, due in equal measure to his expertise as a craftsman (tool and die maker), his artistic interest in design, and his hands-on experience as one of the world’s most sought-after and respected hand-to-hand combat instructors. Emerson’s work has been featured and exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Museum. There are only a handful of living artists who can claim that. As an instructor in hand-to-hand combat and bladed weapons skills, Mr. Emerson has taught the world’s most elite warriors, from the US Navy SEALs to the Parliamentary Guards in London and everywhere in between. He is the author of numerous articles, books and videos on tactics, training and combat. As one of the most sought-after instructors in the world, he is in high demand for seminars and lectures for civilian, military and law enforcement agencies. He is a member of the Martial Arts Hall of Fame alongside such venerable names as Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris. In fact, the only known knife manufacturer that also owns and operates their own training facility is the world-class “Black Shamrock Combat Academy Gym” in Los Angeles, California.
Tim Kennedy made that very clear to me. “The design of this knife had to meet two basic requirements. It has to function as both a tool and a weapon in a combat environment, and secondly, it has to be a knife that any person can comfortably carry in all circumstances.”
That gave me enough work.
In order to begin to satisfy these requirements, I knew that the blade had to be a combination of utility, strength, and weapon. The result is a 3.80-inch long blade for a razor-sharp length of cutting edge and plenty of penetrating power. It is 1,100 inches tall at its widest point (edge to back) and 1.25 inches thick. The blade design features a comfortable yet functional edging on the top of the blade and a thumb opener for easy one-handed opening even when wearing gloves. It features a raised toe design with a gentle curve starting at the thumb button that flows into a long, graceful, cropped top line creating a strong cross-section to the intersection at the toe and a very pointed (“stabbed” as Tim calls it) overall design. The tip is positioned directly on the center line of the blade to achieve the most efficient use or transfer of force when pushed forward. The steel is battle proven 1.54CM steel, heat treated to also withstand a proven 57 to 59 Rockwell hardness, giving you a knife that has just enough flexibility, hardness to hold the blade and ease of sharpening in the most extreme or handicapped, intolerant environments. .
Handle.
Tim also demanded that the knife be as comfortable and safe as possible. The grip I designed features the signature Emerson deep choil design to prevent the hand from sliding forward during extreme use, and two comfortable finger placement curves that terminate at the lower back of the grip. It is a perfect example of Emerson ergonomics, which all Emerson designs are known for. The lock is made of aircraft-grade 6Al4V titanium, and the handles are durable G10 with a medium checkered finish that is impervious to water, oil, fuel and other fluids and liquids.
Tim was very specific about the overall size of the knife as it related to a hard/combat knife. We both agreed that a knife, as opposed to a fixed blade, had to be of a size that would be comfortably carried by a soldier, policeman or civilian at any time – any time – in any place. If a knife is too big, too bulky, or too heavy, it’s more likely to be in a glove box or on a shelf when it should be in your pocket when you need it, quick, quick, and in a hurry. After all, always remember that when violence or emergency situations arise, you cannot choose, they choose you. Measuring 9.0 inches overall and 5.530 inches when closed, the knife features a convenient pocket clip so it should always be ready to deploy as your constant pocket companion.
So the design of the TKF folding knife comes from two guys who know a little bit about the heavy duty knife and what a knife is supposed to do when you need it.
I think we did it. Both practical and tactical, this design will serve the needs of any soldier, sailor, airman or marine, while meeting the needs of any law enforcement operator as well as any rugged, civilian, everyday carry needs.
Take my word for it. This knife will go down as another iconic Emerson combat/tactical design because, as I’ve said many times before, “you can’t beat experience.” And in this case, Ernest Emerson and Tim Kennedy brought a lot of boats to this project. I would stake my reputation – and my life – on this knife.
Oh yeah – it’s 100% made in America…down to the last screw.
Use it, abuse it, just don’t lose it.
Best regards,
Ernest Emerson.
