Description
Excalibur Silver Sword Marto MA752.1.
Excalibur is the most famous name of the legendary sword of King Arthur, which was attributed various extraordinary properties.
There are several theories as to the origin of his name. One of the most accepted is that it comes from the Latin “EX Calce Liberatus”, “freed from stone”. Others believe that Excalibur means “Cutting Steel”, referring to one of its many magical properties.
According to legend, when King Uther Pendragon died, Merlin created a sword (Exalibur) on the Isle of Avalon and drove it into a stone in London near the chapel.
The most widespread legend says that Arthur managed to get off the rock by an act of magic from Marlin. The sword was kept in a scabbard that caused the king not to lose blood when he carried it into battle. Already dying, Arthur ordered his knight to throw the sword into the lake where Nimue, the Lady of the Lake, lived. As she throws it, a hand dressed in white silk catches her and takes her into the depths.
The sword is said to rest with the king in Avalon, awaiting his return.
