Spyderco’s Project Chaparral is a unique approach to the men’s folding knife genre. Named after a plant native to the western US known for its extreme durability, the Chaparral Series uses a single design format to showcase a variety of signature handle materials and texture patterns.

All Chaparral models share the same basic features. They are exceptionally thin to minimize weight and are very comfortable to wear – even in a suit. Their leaf-shaped PlainEdge blades are completely flat-ground from USA-made CTS-XHP stainless steel and have a nice satin finish for near-effortless cutting performance. The blades also feature a fully accessible round hole for easy opening with one or both hands, making all Chaparrals completely symmetrical and fully ambidextrous.

Where Chaparral models show their individuality is in their handles. Launched in 2011, the first member of the family featured skeletonized all-stainless steel inserts and subtly textured carbon fiber scales. It was followed in 2012 by the Chaparral Titanium, which boasted solid titanium scales precision-machined with an intricate geometric pattern. The titanium theme was continued with the Stepped Titanium and Blue Stepped Titanium models, which were released in 2013 and 2014. Both feature an incredibly detailed ‘graded’ pattern machined to both scales. Composed entirely of straight lines, this stunning design creates the illusion of curves and detailed geometric shapes. In the Blue Stepped version, the scales are anodized with a brilliant shade of blue during the machining process to create a spectacular contrast of alternating blue and silver surfaces. Earlier this year, Spyderco added a version to the Chaparral family with scales made from Raffir – a composite material made from fine layers of corrugated metal mesh encased in a translucent epoxy resin.

While Spyderco is undoubtedly proud of the Chaparral family and the variety and pride of ownership it offers, they still felt it was missing something – a lightweight, affordable, user-oriented expression of the Chaparral spirit optimized for everyday wear. To fill this void, they created the Chaparral Lightweight.

The Chaparral Lightweight offers the same refined design theme, functionality and cutting performance as its brothers, but with a simple, reliable and affordable injection molded handle. Its solid gray glass fiber reinforced nylon (FRN) handle reduces its weight to just 2.1 ounces – 22% lighter than its titanium handle counterparts. Its contoured construction also allows for the incorporation of Spyderco’s high-traction two-way texturing pattern style. Despite its slim profile and light weight, this version of the Chaparral still offers the power of nested, skeletonized stainless steel inlays and a stainless steel backspacer. They ensure excellent structural strength and precise alignment of all key components.

Like other versions of the Chaparral, the Lightweight features a centrally located lockback mechanism that locks the blade securely open and allows safe and easy one-handed closing. Its 50/50 index finger choil straddles the blade/handle junction providing a solid purchase for a forward, “choked” grip. Despite the knife’s compact size, this feature allows even larger hands a full four-finger grip. Matching “jimping” (grooves) on the choil and thumb ramp offer additional texture for even more control in precision cutting tasks. A double-sided deep pocket wire clip attached to the rear end of the handle supports left- or right-side folding carry, keeping this remarkable knife discreetly ready for immediate access.

The Chaparral Lightweight proudly upholds the traditional values ​​of the Chaparral family, offering the same comfort, reliability and high performance as its brothers, but at a fraction of the price.
